  2.                                   CLARISDRAW SELF-GUIDED DEMONSTRATION

  5. Welcome to ClarisDraw! 
  6. ClarisDraw™ software is the next generation of MacDraw® software, the best-selling Macintosh graphics application of all time. New ClarisDraw integrates drawing, full-color painting, image editing and presentations with a revolutionary graphics intelligence. That means you can easily produce logos, technical drawings, flyers, slide shows or virtually any freeform graphic.

ClarisDraw has been designed especially for you and the projects you need to get done. This ClarisDraw self-guided demonstration will walk you through just a few examples of things you can create with ClarisDraw. You’ll see how the new features make creating great graphics easier and faster than ever before.

  10. GETTING STARTED
  11. To use the ClarisDraw demonstration, you need: 
  12. • Any Apple Macintosh computer with a 68000 or greater processor
  13. • Hard disk
  14. • 2MB memory (4MB for Apple System 7 and System 7 Pro; 8MB for Power Macintosh computers)
  15. • CD-ROM drive with appropriate drivers and software (for CD-ROM version only)
  16. • The enclosed diskette or CD-ROM

  19. To begin the ClarisDraw demo:

  21. CD-ROM version
  22. • Insert the CD-ROM.
  23. • Open the ClarisDraw folder.
  24. • Be sure to read the installation instructions included on the CD.
  25. • Double-click the ClarisDraw Demo Start icon.

  27. Disk version
  28. • Insert the disk.
  29. • Double click the ClarisDraw Trial icon to install the demo files to your hard drive.
  30. • Open the ClarisDraw folder.
  31. • Double-click the ClarisDraw Demo Start icon.

The first screen you will see is the welcome area that displays the work area and tools available in ClarisDraw. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with this screen, then  click the right arrow on the slide pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen to advance to the first activity screen (Diagram).

  35. CREATE A DYNAMIC DIAGRAM 
  36. When deadlines are tight, you need to create drawings quickly and easily. ClarisDraw features smart tools that actually do some of the work for you.
  37. The SmartShapes tools, for instance, let you draw common objects with a simple click and drag, so adding the final elements to this graphic is easy.

  39. • Click and hold the SmartShapes tool; drag the floating palette to the work area.
  40. • Double-click the Cylinder tool (bottom row, far right of the SmartShapes palette). Above the words “Information Center” in the center of the screen, drag and draw three cylinders.
  41. • Close the SmartShapes palette.
  42. • Select the Pointer tool and Shift-click the three cylinders.

  44. Now we can add a gradient fill to the cylinders by choosing from the colors, patterns and fills in the style bar at the top of your drawing.
  45. • Click and hold the Gradient button; The gradient fill palette is located at the top of the screen (in the style bar).  It is the third button over (color, pattern, gradient).

  47. • Choose the orange gradient fill in the lower left-hand corner of the Gradient palette.
  48.  
  49. Adding shadows to objects used to take a number of steps to complete. Now, with the SmartShadow™ tool, you can add depth and sharpness to elements with a single click.

  51. • Click the SmartShadow button in the Style bar that runs across the top of the document window.
  52.  
  53. Now that’s the fast and easy way to add depth to any and all of your graphics.
  54.  
  55. •    Click the right arrow on the slide pop-up menu to advance to the next screen (Seating layout).

  57. COMPLETE A CONFERENCE LAYOUT
  58. ClarisDraw has innovative tools that make you more productive when creating and editing complex drawings. Keeping objects aligned used to be a repetitive task. 
  59. But now the SmartAlign™ feature automatically maintains alignment and spacing—and you only have to do it once.
  60.  
  61. You will notice that the six chairs at the bottom of the drawing are not lined up. 
  62. •  Select the Pointer and drag a selection box around the bottom six chairs.
  63. •    Choose Alignment from the Arrange menu.
  64. •    Select the Create Relationship check box. By selecting the Create check box, a relationship is established so the objects you align will stay aligned, even if you move one of them.
  65. •    Click align horizontal center button (top row, second from the left). Notice how all of the rows now line up properly. 
  66. • Click outside the chairs to de-select them.
  67. • Drag one of the chairs you’ve just aligned to see how they all stay aligned.
  68. • Close the Alignment floating palette.

  70. With the help of the SmartConnector™ feature, ClarisDraw allows you to create straight or angled lines that stay permanently connected to objects, even when those objects are moved. Here’s how it works:

  72. • Double-click the straight SmartConnector tool.   
  73. • Position cursor over the left end of projection screen graphic. 
  74.  
  75. Notice how the PointGuide™ feature assists you in locating the end- and mid-points of the projection screen graphic.

  77. • Click and drag a SmartConnector line from the left corner of the projection screen to the center of the overhead projector graphic.
  78. • Repeat step from the right side of the screen to the center of the projector. Press Enter.
  79. • Drag the overhead projector graphic down and even with second row of chairs. Notice how the SmartConnector lines stayed connected when you moved the graphic.
  80. • Advance to next screen (Flyer).

  82. ADD FLAIR TO A FLYER
  83. ClarisDraw offers you the flexibility to mix graphics, text and other images to create newsletters, flyers and brochures—all in the same easy-to-use program. Let’s start by using one of the advanced text-handling features to wrap the text around the circle in this example:

  85. • Click the top of the large circle around the globe 
  86. (Note: clicking on the sides of the circle will select the text frame and Text Wrap will not work).
  87. • Choose Text Wrap-Irregular from the Text menu.
  88.  
  89. Another advanced text handling feature is binding text to curves or objects. This allows you to create dramatic effects.
  90.  
  91. • Click the title text (“Conférence…“) and then Shift-click the blue ocean of the globe.
  92. • Choose Bind Text to Object from the Text menu. 
  93.  
  94. Now let’s add a gradient fill to the text on the bottom of the page. Normally you couldn’t add special fills to text. But by converting the text to bezigon curves, the text becomes a graphic that can be manipulated and filled like any other object you create. Try this:

  96. • Select the text at the bottom of the document (“Summer 1994“). 
  97. • Choose Convert to Bezigons from the Arrange menu.
  98. • With the text still selected, apply the light blue gradient in the bottom right-hand corner of the gradient fill palette. For even more flair, let’s add an emboss effect to our graphic. 
  99. • With the text still selected, Shift-click the large circle.
  100. • Click the Emboss button in the style menu. Notice the 3-dimensional effect your drawing now has.
  101. •Advance to the next screen (Floor Plan).

  103. DESIGN AN OFFICE FLOOR PLAN
  104. Creating drawings from scratch can be a time-consuming process. But not with ClarisDraw! Even graphic novices can create great graphics with these easy-to-use drawing tools. 
  105. The Guideliner™ tool, for example, offers a digital T-square for accuracy. In the next example, you will see how easy it is to finish creating the receptionist desk using the Guidelines tool.

  107. • Choose Guideliner from the Layout menu. 
  108. • Select the Bezigon tool.
  109.  
  110. Notice how the cross-hairs of the Guideliner help locate the end- and mid-points of objects as you move the cursor around the screen. 
  111. If you’ve never used a Bezigon tool before, you should know that it’s one of the most flexible and accurate drawing tools available. With it you can draw complex objects that use both straight and curved lines. 
  112. To demonstrate, follow along using this combination of clicks (curved lines) and Option-clicks (straight lines). 
  113. • Finish the receptionist desk (in the lower left hand corner), by drawing a bezigon that connects to the corners of the two gray rectangles. Option-click the points on the corners to create sharp angles and use a regular click to create a curved line that connects the desk rectangles. A graphic example of how to do this is included in the printed tutorial booklet that comes with the trial disk or CD.

  115. Now let’s pick up the color from the rest of the desk and apply it to the new section just created.

  117. • Double-click the Eye Dropper tool and click in the middle of the gray desk rectangle.
  118. • Click on the desk border you just created to apply the color.
  119. • Press Enter to de-select the Eye Dropper tool.

  121. Other helpful features, like the drag-and-drop clip art libraries, make adding any of thousands of pre-created elements quick and easy.

  123. • Click the Library button in the style bar.
  124. • Open the file “Demo Library.”
  125. • Drag the Library palette to the right side of the screen.
  126. • Scroll down through the palette to the bottom.

  128. Drag and drop the Library item “New Door” into the wall opening in the center of the floor plan, making sure that the left side of the door bounding box is even with the left side of the wall. 
  129. • Close the Demo Library.

  131. ClarisDraw even helps you accomplish repetitive tasks quickly with the graphic equivalent of the search and replace feature found in many word processing programs. That means we can change all the old doors in this floor plan with our new door using a single command, like this:

  133. • Make sure the new door is selected.
  134. • Choose Replace Clones from the Edit menu. Move the dialog box to right side of screen.
  135. • Click Use Selected.
  136. • Click Replace All.
  137. • Close Find/Replace Clones dialog box.

  139. WORK WITH SCANNED IMAGES
  140. ClarisDraw also allows you to integrate photos and other bit-mapped images into your documents. For a demonstration, open the Paint Tutorial file located in the ClarisDraw Demo Folder. Instructions are included in that file.

  142. EXPERIMENT WITH CLARISDRAW ON YOUR OWN

With ClarisDraw, it’s easier than ever before to combine and edit text, drawn objects, paint objects, scanned images and photos in a single document. And now that you have an idea just how easy it is to create great graphics with ClarisDraw, take some time and experiment with the program. You’ll find you can create all sorts of exciting things with ClarisDraw. When you’re finished, please choose Quit from the File menu.
